First 8 Minutes Of Saw 3D: I SAW IT.

Tonight I saw the first EIGHT minutes of Saw 3D during Comic Con at a small, intimate screening following a quick Q&A with Kevin, Tobin, Koules, and Burg.
I paid VERY close attention so I could come back here and tell you guys exactly what happened.
I think I’ve put together a nice, in0depth post with some visuals to go with it, so enjoy! :)

IMPORTANT: You know I’m a huge Saw fan and I think Kevin directing is the best thing that’s happened to the series in a long time, but I’m not a Saw WORSHIPPER, so I will say what I feel to help you understand how it was. It was a rough 8 minutes, not completely finished, so everything I said is subject to change, in a way. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT.

Oh, and SPOILERS.

That being said… the first 8 minutes of Saw 3D:

First line in the movie: “Hello Mr. Hindle. Or as they call you around the hospital… Zepp.” I KID YOU NOT. SAW 1. SO EPIC.

You know exactly what’s coming…

We see a trail of blood as it pans up and cuts back and forth to black to show producer credits and whatnot. Then we see a foot… then a stump… then the doctor himself. Dr. Gordon is pulling himself along. All new footage. We see his face as he goes around a corner and it is just EPIC. This whole scene is epic as hell. The audience went insane, as you can imagine. So Gordon is pulling himself along and comes to a steaming hot pipe. He touches it and pulls back quickly. Then he sits up and holds up his stump… HE IS CAUTERIZING THE WOUND. He mashes his stump into the pipe and screams bloody murder.

Cut to black.

We see a big public area, lots of people walking around. Then we see a building with a crazy contraption in the front window, two guys strapped two it and three saw blades total.

People keep coming and looking into the window as the scene progresses. One guy wakes up, then the other. “What the hell is this?! WTF?!” and THEN the second guy notices that he knows he other guy. “What are you doing here?” The first guy realizes HE knows the OTHER guy. “What are YOU doing here?!” Suddenly we see a girl above them. She’s hanging over the trap with her stomach aiming down at the middle saw blade. The two guys have saw blades aiming at their chests. Billy rolls out and tells them what’s going on.

The two guys like the girl, and she’s been cheating on them (and maybe other people), as well as pushing the two guys to break the law to “fulfill her material needs”. This wasn’t explained, but it could lead to a reason why it was in public? I don’t know, I’m just looking for a reason as to why it was in public.

To help explain how this trap works, I drew this nifty diagram!

BASICALLY all of the blades move together. If pushed from one side, they all move that way. The two guys have to push back and forth to kill each other and save the girl. She is being lowered over the course of a minute until she would finally hit the blade and die.

Okay, Olmec. 60 seconds on the clock.

The blades start spinning. The guys push back and forth against each other. The girl tells the first guy she loves him and that she has to kill the second guy. The second guy looks at her shocked; “I thought you loved ME!”. The girl turns to him and tells her it’s always been him, KILL THE FIRST GUY! So he lies to them to help herself, ala the Carousel Trap. Both guys go back and forth, with the first guy getting cut a little bit at one point.

Finally the guys literally realize “bros before hos” and decide that the girl is the problem and she isn’t worth them dying. They stop struggling, which leaves the saw blade in the middle up, thus killing the girl in a scene similar to the Pendulum Trap.

Cut to black.

Saw 3D

That’s it.

So my opinion of the first eight minutes is split completely. The first half with Gordon was GREAT. The second half with the love triangle didn’t do it for me. Maybe that’s because it followed Gordon, but it just felt lacking. I think the reasons I feel that way are because of the writing and acting; the dialogue wasn’t too great and the concept in general was kinda goofy, and the acting (especially from the girl) was kinda lame. It felt VERY Final Destination 3D. Everything looked great, but it was the acting and the dialogue (“It’s always been you, you have to kill HIM”) that made it kinda weird and goofy.

In conclusion: I’m excited to see the rest. I have high hopes because I respect Kevin’s opinion and he told me he thinks we’ll enjoy it. Plus his directing is great of course so hopefully even with any other pitfalls in the script or acting, he will have been able to fix it!
